LIBRARY TO SHED ITS VINYL > by Janina R. Williams
Starting
August 1, the Champaign Public Library will be selling American and ethnic
folk music for a dollar a record. Other genres of music being sold include
big band, jazz, popular and children's records. About 2,000 records in the
collection are up for sale.
From
9 a.m. to 9 p.m., music fans will have a chance to rummage through old
vinyl. The sale will continue until the last record is gone, said Judith
Blaford, the audio/video director at the Champaign Public Library.
The
library made the decision to discard the record collection because they
were strapped for space and they needed to make room for newer formats,
Blaford said. Books on compact disc, audio books and DVDs will fill the
space, she said.
Money
from the sale goes to The Friends of the Library, an organization that
focuses on giving back to the library by sponsoring events.
The
circulation department at the Champaign Public Library is working hard
to get the event ready, Blaford said.
"You
don't find folk albums that often," Sean Roberts, of the Wright Sound
CD Exchange said. "People that buy folk albums usually don't sell
them."
Blues
and jazz records that are really popular sell well, said Bob Diener, the
owner of Record Swap. He said reggae, African music and a fair amount
of rock sell, too.
"I
think people that shop in those categories are very specific," Jeff
Evans at Record Service said. "They know what they are looking for,
and they hold onto those albums."
Folk
compact discs cost $1 or $2 less than regular-priced CDs at the Wright
CD exchange and do not sell as often as rock or alternative CDs, Roberts
said. However, classical blues CDs like John Coltrane do sell, Evans said.
Folk
music does sell, but again it depends on the artist and the label, Diener
said.
