Hola everybody,

I hope this finds you in good spirits.

So, my parents are horror buffs and I was practically raised on Evil Dead, so I love all things horror. Since Halloween is coming up, I’ve decided to publish horror stories all month. I am on short story 7 of 19!

This one is called, The Town on the Road. It was originally published by Luna Station Quarterly. I have since updated it. It’s about Emily. She’s on her way to visit her boyfriend when she finds herself in the middle of a thunderstorm. Low on gas and without a working phone, she searches a mysterious town for help, but will she find what she needs or be trapped there forever?

Hey all,

I am on short story 6 of 19! Yes! This has been quite the project. I have been burning the midnight oil on more than one occasion, but I like it.

My latest story is called South Padre Island. This is the story of the Johnson family who decides to take a vacation to South Padre Island. From the moment they arrive, a series of unfortunate events occur leaving them to wonder if they’re in over their heads.

If you’ve ever been on vacation and thought, this place is odd, then this is the story for you.

This & That Cover

These last couple of months have been surreal. My family and I have been trying to cope with this new way of life, but it’s been tough. We had so many plans, which have thus been canceled. We never imagined 2020 would be like this. It’s been a strange year, to say the least. Hang in there, folks.

One of the ways I’ve been coping has been to focus on my writing. As you know, I have a short story project where I’m publishing one short story a week until the end of 2020. I’ve recently released number five of nineteen. My latest story, This and That is about Brandon and Leslie. They’ve been married for ten years and have reached their boiling point. When Leslie finds an engraved lighter in Brandon’s pants, she plays detective, but will she like what she finds?

Orange Heart

Hello all,

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this previously, but I live in Chicago in the Wicker Park neighborhood. It’s a unique and rather cool area filled with lots of different stores, events and people. There is a lot of love here.

Unfortunately, a tragic incident occurred this past week, which rocked our community. We are heartbroken, but we are going to keep our heads up because that’s what we do. If you would like to read more about what I’m referring to, please visit: https://abc7.ws/3hiSID8. If you’d like to donate to Olga Maria Calderon’s family’s GoFundMe, you can do so here: https://bit.ly/2R7gJm9.

Rest in peace Olga.

Peeling the Onion

Hello all,

How are you? If you’re having a good day, please keep having a good day. Life is so hectic right now and I want to prompt you to always try your best to find things that make you happy. The things that make me happiest right now are the sun, when my husband brings me a cup of coffee in the morning, kickboxing, tasty plates of food, carefully made drinks, my son’s laugh, YouTube fail videos, messaging with my siblings, and Audible.

As you know, I’m in the middle of a short story writing bonanza. This is the second week of my short story project and my latest story, Peeling the Onion is out! It’s about Bryant and India who are happily married. Everything is perfect except for one thing, Bryant’s best friend Jay. Jay comes over unannounced, drinks and eats everything in the house, and stays for weeks at a time. Jay’s presence is driving India crazy. A wedge begins to build between Bryant’s and India’s relationship even though Bryant is trying his best to keep the peace between the two people he loves the most. Everything is coming to a head and Bryant is being forced to make a choice, but whom will he choose?

Yep, you read that right. I’m publishing one short story a week until the end of 2020. That’s nineteen short stories in all, but before I get into that, I want to talk about COVID. I know how difficult this time has been for all of us and I want to wish you and your families safety, love, and happiness.

So, how have you been keeping yourselves entertained? Have you been making daily trips to the grocery store? Are you binge-watching old TV shows? Are you reading? Ah, reading. I love reading. Reading is my thing and I have the perfect story for you to read. My new short story, Friendship Schmendship will definitely keep your mind off of COVID.

It’s about Jessie and Natalie, twenty-something roommates navigating their lives together in a small, two-bedroom apartment. Their world is filled with copious amounts of alcohol and selfishness, but not much money. Things take a turn for the worst when Jessie realizes she’s had enough of Natalie’s shenanigans. When Jessie confronts Natalie with the truth, Natalie hits Jessie with some painful truths of her own. Will this blowout strengthen their friendship or end it? You don’t want to miss this. It’s available on Amazon now.

So what are you waiting for? It’s time to get your read on!

See you next week with a new story!

Forming New Habits Leads to Original Fiction Ideas

Ideas, Motivation  Comments Off on Forming New Habits Leads to Original Fiction Ideas

Creating new habits and forming rituals leads to idea generation. How do I know? I’ve done it.

Here’s my proof:

Last year, I made the decision to increase my weekly workout routine from two workouts a week to five. At first, this change was about becoming healthier, but it became so much more than that. Exercising five days a week increased my strength, stamina, and self-discipline. I don’t say to myself, I can’t anymore. I say to myself; you can do this. How did I do it? One day, I was complaining to my husband about my lack of weight loss and he said, “I work out every day. You want results, you have to work out daily.” I mumbled some random excuse under my breath and went about the rest of my day. A week later, I woke up one morning and decided, I’d had enough. I vowed to work out between 5-6 days a week, even when I didn’t feel like it. For the last nine weeks, I arrived at my kickboxing studio ready to rise. I kept motivated by reading inspirational quotes and listening to empowerment videos. It sounds silly, I know, but it works. It took me two years to gain this mentality and I’m not going back.Though I value my physical health, I realize the significance of having good mental health. Balance is important. To keep my mental health up to par, I journal every morning. I visualize what I want out of life and write down. I also have a gratitude journal, which affords me a moment of clarity. It helps me to zero-in on what’s important to me. I write in these journals daily. I keep track of it all in an app called, HabitNow. It’s a great way to keep focused.

Becoming disciplined in these other areas of my life has made me think about how I’ve been managing my writing life. I haven’t been managing it very well. I haven’t been writing as much as I wanted. Some of it had to do with the fact that my office closet was overrun with too much “stuff.” For some reason, everything always seems to find its way there. I knew I needed to declutter. When I finally cleared the space, I felt so free. I made a pact with myself to declutter my office once a month to keep from reaching that point again. I’m def going to do it. If you’re interested in getting rid of paper and going digital, try the Fast Scanner Pro + Box apps. They are brilliant.

Decluttering is a Superpower

Clearing out my office motivated me to declutter the rest of my home. In doing this, I have made it easier to clean. Less stuff equals less stuff to clean. I felt so energized and determined after I decluttered that a ton of fiction ideas began to flow.

Even though, I had focus and these new ideas popping into my head, I found it difficult to write at home. I found myself cleaning, talking on the phone, or watching television. Ugh! I knew I had to make a change for 2020. I researched co-working spaces in Wicker Park. I found a brilliant spot called, Workvana. It’s a beautiful, quiet spot with great energy. I’m currently building the habit to go Monday thru Friday. Some weeks work better than others, but I am committed.

So, what do all these new habits have to do with idea generation?

I was about to get to that!

By creating all these new habits and sticking to them, I’ve cleared up tons of thinking time. So many incredible story and project ideas have flooded my brain in the last couple of months. I can hardly believe it. I’m excited and ready to execute them all.

I am so happy and grateful that I got this creative recharge. I needed it.
