Fertile Ground: A Review by Janina R. Williams

A beautiful goddess emerges from the backstage. Her presence evokes a roar of claps and howls as her face sparkles against the light. She is wearing a golden-feathered crown and a brown striped dress and her name is Navasha Daya; the lead singer of the group Fertile Ground.

The group members file onto the stage dispersing to their designated areas. A man wearing a beige corduroy hat and thin-rimmed glasses takes a seat in front of a keyboard. I later learn that he is James Collins, Navasha’s husband. Mark Prince takes a seat behind the shiny drums. Craig Austin picks up a dull saxophone. Upstage almost hidden, is a man playing percussions by the name of Ekendra Das. The illuminating scarlet wall behind the stage is gleaming with a colorful mural adding to the jazzy vibe of the Hot House, which indubitably lives up to its name.

Their music feels free, organic, and extremely innovative; the conga drums reminiscent of a heartbeat. They use elements of soul, hip-hop, and jazz to create a universal ambiance present in the Hot House that night.

Fertile Ground is celebrating the release of their newest album “Seasons Change,” but they also pay homage to their second album “Spiritual War.” They mimic each song with unparalleled precision so much so that if you closed your eyes it would sound like the album itself. The eclectic Latin-Soul beats mix with Navasha’s voice energizing the audience.

They end the show by thanking the audience for coming out and Navasha ends the set by stressing the importance of being hopeful as well as spiritual. They will be playing Saturday, September 23rd, 2006 at the Hot House. Come out and support.
